Southern Indiana Wildflower Walks

Ground-pine Club-moss: Lycopodium obscurum
photographed in Owen County

While not a flowering plant, it is always a pleasure to see ground-pine on woodland walks. This Club-moss (lycopodium) is an evergreen. The stems grow underground, while the tree-like branches shown here are often the ground-cover amid evergreen trees and ferns. Like the fern, they produce minute spores on spikes rather than seeds. A 1936 Garden Encyclopedia says, “many native species were formerly ruthlessly collected for us as Christmas greens.”
