Wayne County, Indiana
Visitors to Wayne County encounter a history built on generations of folks who had a pioneering spirit and appreciation for nature. In 1805, Quaker David Hoover discovered the serene beauty along the Whitewater River which meandered gently through what is now Wayne County. Among those who followed were Quakers John Smith and Jeremiah Cox, who settled along what would become Richmond's Main Street. By 1816, Smith and Cox began to divide their land and plat streets. In 1818, the town officially became Richmond. Visitors to Wayne County today browse countless antique shops, stroll tree-lined streets and delightful parks. They can explore museums or the arboretum, enjoy distinctive restaurants or take in a night of theater, music or baseball. It's all in Wayne County, a relaxing and rewarding stop along Interstate 70.
